Sevlievo, Bulgaria
The city of Sevlievo is in northern Bulgaria near the geographical center of the country. It is 178 km east of the capital Sofia and 283 km west of Varna.The altitude is 201 meters in the lowest parts of that region while on some nearby ridges it reaches 1900 meters. There is a wide amplitude between the lowest and the highest temperatures – from +30-35 degrees Celsius during the summer to -20-25 degrees Celsius in the winter period. Only 9 km. to the west of Sevlievo, in the village of Sennik - the birth place of the world famous champion of freestyle fight Dan Kolov is his house located, which has been turned into a museum. The resting complex base of the artificial lake Alexander Stamboliiski, near by Madan and Bogatovski artificial lake are suitable places for the admirers of the water-motor sports, as well as for sport fishing. 5 km. southwest from the town a resting complex is located in the land Bagdalata - with natural lime forest and a game reserve. One should never neglect the possibility for high mountain tourism to the highest peak in the Balkan - Botev (2921m), with starting points - the resting complex in Lagat and the town of Apriltsi. Landmark sites ‘Central Balkan’ National Park This is a protected area with worldwide importance for preserving biological diversity and also Europe’s largest protected beech forests – an important part of the pan European environmental network. Here you will find more than a half of the plant species in Bulgaria, a large number of herbs and an 11 plants which cannot be found elsewhere in the world. The park is the last home for wolves, bears, wild goats, royal slag. It gives shelter to more than 120 species of birds. Threatened species can also be found in the mountain. The massive cliffs, canyons and waterfalls are among most notable landscape sites in this part of the Balkan mountain. Batoshevski monastery The Medieval Batoshevski Monastery with its splendid architecture and marvelous frescoes, altars and fret iconostasis is extremely attractive. The rooms of the monastery offer possibilities for a longer stay. Quite interesting are some of the ancient churches in the villages in the region, where there are unique fret altars and ancient icons, a beautiful church plate from ÕV²²² and Õ²Õ century. |
